VietHope Newsletter No. 02-2020

Greetings to all VietHopers! As we approach the end of yet another year, we bring to you another dose of the VietHope Newsletter on the exciting and tremendous support that VietHope has successfully garnered and delivered to countless students in Vietnam in the past months.
Despite the numerous adversities that this year has pitted against us, VietHope’s mission of ensuring a deserving opportunity towards an education and thus a brighter future continues to strongly persist and manifest itself in the support and compassion that has been shown all around towards Vietnamese youth. In other words, VietHope has continued to offer a powerful beacon of Hope even in this status quo that one may come to label as the “New Normal”.
How has VietHope become a supportive harbinger of hope? Be sure to keep reading below to see how events like the Google Campaign and Virtual Donor Appreciation Party became instrumental in VietHope’s continuation of progressive change for many young students and in providing that hope–that sense of compassionate familyhood – that is so needed in a difficult time like right now.
After a successful 2-week fundraising campaign at Google Giving Week, VietHope was able to raise $26,370 along with a surprisingly remarkable amount of encouragement and engagement from our community. We cannot express enough gratitude and appreciation to our Google sponsor for their contributions during the campaign: Quang Duong, Oanh Nguyen, Tammy Phan, Dani Ton, and Mary Nguyen. Thank You for your kindness and generosity towards our students!
Just this past Sunday, VietHope hosted its very first and very successful Virtual Donor Appreciation Party with the theme of Hope in the New Normal and an eye-opening "Meet our Students" session. We can’t wait to introduce to you a small video of our students’ stories and a special gift from our Board.

In October, our low-income students from Central Vietnam faced another challenge: catastrophic floods, which have greatly destroyed their houses, farms, and businesses. Thus, VietHopers and our donors decided to come together to support 26 VietHope students. After 4 weeks, we raised $1570 in Vietnam and $8900 in the US (A huge thanks to chi Anh Hoa at Gilead). This amount will be transferred to Vietnam and distributed to those 26 students directly by our volunteers. Thank you everyone for your kindness!
During the past quarter, our Vietnam team has successfully finished a scholarship ceremony and training section in Can Gio (Saigon) for our MDP (Merit Development Program) students. The floodings in Central Vietnam delayed our scholarship process for MDP students in Hue but we manage to give scholarships and the first-time training workshop this December.
One of the greatest news we want to share is the record number of USP (University Scholarship Program) applications: 500. This could not happen without the effort from teams in Vietnam and the encouragement from EC  and the Board. We will continue the scholarship process in this Dec with an interview round and end with a scholarship ceremony in Saigon and Hue soon.

In addition, our active volunteers just received an interesting course about Sketchnote technique under ADP (Alumni Development Program). Last but not least, we are about to launch a new logo for our YWP (Youth Workshop Program) and an upcoming talk show about how to get a scholarship to study abroad. Stay tuned for more updates!

Upcoming Humans of VietHope Photo Contest

With the termination of our summer pilot programs of Humans of VietHope and Hometown/Travel Sharing, VietHope has taken the feedback of our participants and combined it with both programs’ results to produce a special, recurring program just for our students and Alumni: The Humans of VietHope Contest! Every so often, we will announce contests ranging from writing stories and poems to even photography and edited videos, to be judged by a VietHope panel of experts and volunteers. Here’s a little sneak peak for all of you: this coming holiday, be on the lookout for our very first Humans of VietHope Photography Contest! As you know, a photo can convey a thousand words. So VietHopers, get ready to see how our very own students can creatively express themselves in just a few photos!
