University Scholarship

Program Overview

The University Scholarship Program (USP) provides scholarships of $150, sufficient to cover tuition and educational supplies for one year.
USP strives to help scholarship recipients in two ways: [1] To lessen the heavy financial burden of college, enabling students to succeed at the university. [2] To build a community of youths dedicated to using their education to give back to their villages and communities.
USP selects students based jointly on financial need, academic record and leadership potential.
The program employs a robust application process, comprising an application with transcript, essays, recommendations, and interviews.

In 2007, 226 students out of 400 applications were selected as University Scholarship recipients.
50% of the selected students in 2007 had family incomes under the poverty line.

USP scholarship recipients are academically high-achieving despite coming from difficult backgrounds:

96% have a high school GPA of 7.0 or higher, with 49% at 8.0 or higher (out of maximum 10.0 GPA.
On their university entrance exams, 65% scored 20 points or higher (out of maximum 30 points).
50% come from families that live under the poverty line, as defined by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam.
50% have parents who are farmers.
60% of their parents never attended school past middle school, and only 6% went beyond high school.
46% have parents who are either deceased, have lost working ability, or are chronically ill.
25% hold a job outside of school in order to help finance their university education.
